Gardening, wellbeing and physiotherapy: growing strength, balance and confidence at home

Spring often brings a renewed sense of optimism. The lighter mornings, occasional blue skies and hints of warmth encourage many of us to step outside, even if there is still a chill in the air. For people of all ages and activity levels, spending time outdoors can feel restorative – and for many, gardening plays a central role in that.

Whether it’s a back garden, an allotment, window boxes or a few pots by the front door, growing plants can offer far more than flowers, or fresh fruit and vegetables. Gardening provides gentle but meaningful physical activity, supports mental wellbeing, and gives people a sense of purpose and achievement – particularly important for older adults and those living with long-term conditions or disabilities. The physical benefits of gardening

Gardening naturally encourages movement. Tasks such as planting, watering, pruning and potting help build:

  • Strength, particularly in the legs, arms and core

  • Balance, through weight-shifting, standing tasks and controlled movements

  • Stamina, by sustaining activity over time in a way that feels purposeful rather than like formal exercise

For many people receiving physiotherapy, these are the exact areas we aim to improve. Gardening allows these physical skills to be practised in a familiar, enjoyable setting, making the activity feel relevant and motivating.

The mental and emotional benefits of being outdoors

The psychological benefits of spending time outdoors are just as important. Being in green spaces can reduce stress, improve mood and support emotional wellbeing. Gardening, in particular, offers:

  • A sense of achievement as plants grow and thrive

  • Hope and anticipation as seasons change

  • Opportunities for mindfulness, from listening to birdsong to noticing colour and texture

Even small moments outdoors can have an impact. In areas such as Croydon and Sutton, local parks, community gardens and green spaces offer opportunities to enjoy spring bulbs emerging, snowdrops in bloom, or simply a short, gentle walk in fresh air.

When getting outside feels difficult

For some older adults or people with long-term conditions or disabilities (https://croydon.home-links.co.uk/conditions_we_treat), getting outdoors can feel physically or mentally challenging. Reduced mobility, pain, fatigue, fear of falling or low confidence can all become barriers. There can also be an emotional sense of loss or frustration when someone can no longer care for their garden as they once did.

As physiotherapists providing home visiting services, we often support people to reconnect with activities that matter to them. Rather than focusing only on exercises, we look at how meaningful tasks – like gardening – can be adapted and safely reintroduced.

A patient-centred approach: Olive’s story

One of my patients, Olive, had always loved her garden. She and her late husband had tended it together for years, and during our physiotherapy sessions she often spoke fondly of the plants he had planted. As her mobility reduced, Olive felt disappointed that she could no longer manage her garden and guilty about asking family members for help.

During one early spring session, Olive mentioned how much she missed the bright colours of her window boxes and front door pots. As our physiotherapy sessions were already focusing on standing balance, strength and endurance, we decided to try something different – taking our next session outdoors.

Together, we planned a simple, achievable task. Olive ordered the plants she wanted and some compost, and during our session she planted her window box on the patio. Without realising it, she practised standing tolerance, balance and functional strength while doing something that genuinely mattered to her.

Over the following months, gardening became part of her physiotherapy programme. Each week we planned tasks together, adapting them as needed. Some days went better than others, but each session outdoors brought visible improvements in Olive’s confidence and wellbeing. Her favourite saying was: “Never underestimate the beauty of a purple petunia you’ve planted yourself.”

When Olive sadly passed away the following spring, her daughter shared how much joy those gardening sessions had brought her mother. Her garden had once again become a place of pride and comfort.

Physiotherapy that focuses on what matters

Physiotherapy is about more than physical improvement alone. It’s about understanding what brings meaning, joy and purpose to someone’s life, and building rehabilitation around those goals.

For older adults and people living with long-term conditions or disabilities in Croydon and Sutton, home-based physiotherapy can help individuals:

  • Improve strength, balance and confidence at home

  • Safely return to valued activities such as gardening

  • Maintain independence for longer

  • Support overall wellbeing, not just physical function

If gardening, getting outdoors or reconnecting with everyday activities feels challenging, physiotherapy support at home can make those goals feel achievable again.
